APC, Umuahia South LGA Chairman in War of Words Over Alleged Detention of Party Agent

The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Chairman of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Mr. Chinedu Enwereuzor, have exchanged sharp words following claims that an APC e-registration agent was unlawfully arrested and harassed in the council area.

The allegation was contained in a communiqué issued by APC stakeholders in Umuahia South after a meeting held on Wednesday. The statement, read to journalists by Chief Chidi Nwosu, claimed that the party’s agent, Chidera Emenike, was arrested on January 24, 2026, while conducting the party’s electronic revalidation and registration exercise at Ahiukwu Ward 1 in Amizi–Olokoro.

According to the APC, Emenike was taken into custody and detained at the Ubakala Police Division, allegedly on the instruction of the council chairman. Although the agent was later released, the party said it had reported the matter to the Department of State Services and the Abia State Commissioner of Police.

The stakeholders described the incident as unacceptable, warning against what they called the intimidation of party members carrying out lawful political activities. They stressed that such actions could undermine democratic participation if allowed to continue.

Beyond the alleged arrest, the APC also accused the Umuahia South council leadership of failing to account for funds received since assuming office, claiming that no meaningful infrastructure projects had been executed in the area. The party appealed to Governor Alex Otti to intervene by cautioning local government officials, while urging its members to step up grassroots mobilisation and party registration efforts.

In response, Mr. Enwereuzor dismissed the allegations, insisting that he neither ordered nor participated in the arrest or harassment of any APC agent. He explained that the individual in question was merely invited by the police for questioning as a precautionary measure to prevent a possible security breach in the community.
