Kanu Moves to Overturn Court Ruling With Fresh Appeal Filing

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has taken fresh legal steps to overturn his life imprisonment, asking the appellate court to review and set aside the judgment delivered against him on terrorism-related charges. His legal team submitted formal appeal documents seeking a reversal of both the conviction and the sentence.

Kanu was previously found guilty by a Federal High Court on multiple counts connected to terrorism offences. Following the ruling, the court imposed a life sentence, marking a major development in the long-running legal battle involving the separatist figure.

In the appeal filing, his lawyers argue that there were significant legal and procedural flaws in how the trial was conducted. They contend that key judicial steps were either mishandled or overlooked, which they believe affected the fairness of the final judgment.

Part of the appeal claims the court did not properly consider certain factors before delivering the sentence. The defence is urging the higher court to carefully review the record of proceedings and determine whether the verdict should stand.

The case is expected to move into the next phase once the appellate court schedules hearings. The outcome could determine whether the conviction and life sentence remain in force or are overturned after judicial review.
