Nigeria’s federal government has announced a new push to improve the country’s gas‑to‑power system, aiming to boost electricity supply and support industrial expansion. At the National Gas Day event held in Abuja as part of the 9th Nigeria International Energy Summit 2026, officials highlighted how strengthening the gas supply chain could help deliver more stable power and attract long‑term investment.

The government underscored natural gas as the main fuel for more than 70 % of the nation’s grid electricity and said efforts will focus on enhancing the movement of gas from production sites to power plants in a way that is commercially reliable and sustainable.

Key elements of the strategy include securing dependable gas supply agreements for power stations, addressing infrastructure weaknesses, and tackling sector debts that have discouraged investment. Authorities also plan to expand pipelines and processing facilities to reduce disruptions that previously forced power plants to shut down.

Officials described the initiative as part of broader efforts to improve energy security, increase industrial output, and support the economy by turning Nigeria’s vast gas resources into dependable, long‑term energy for manufacturing and other sectors.
