Nigeria has secured a prominent position in international agricultural governance as the country’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, was chosen to lead the 49th Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

His emergence as council chairman was confirmed during the latest governing session, where member states selected him to preside over high-level deliberations focused on food systems, rural investment, and sustainable farming growth across developing regions.

The annual gathering is centered on promoting opportunities for young people in agriculture, with discussions highlighting how innovation, financing, and improved market access can help rural entrepreneurs build successful agribusiness ventures.

Observers say the appointment reflects Nigeria’s expanding voice in global agricultural decision-making and its increasing participation in shaping policies that affect farmers and rural communities worldwide.
