Abia Authorities to Remove Unauthorised Structures in Umuahia

The Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has announced plans to begin demolishing unapproved structures, attachments, and shanties in parts of the Abia State capital. The exercise is aimed at enforcing town‑planning laws and clearing spaces that were built without proper approval.

Officials stated that owners of the illegal buildings have been notified and given time to relocate or remove the structures themselves before the demolition begins. The authorities emphasized that the action is meant to restore order in the city and improve its appearance.

UCDA has previously carried out similar exercises in areas where buildings were erected on government-owned land or violated zoning regulations. Authorities said these actions are part of a broader urban renewal and city development plan.

Some residents and property owners have protested past demolitions, claiming they acquired land legally or that the removals were unfair. Despite this, the government maintains that it will continue enforcing land-use and planning regulations across the city.
