Nigeria’s rugby authorities have unveiled an ambitious plan to reignite the country’s women’s rugby presence across Africa in the 2026 season. The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) revealed a comprehensive calendar that combines grassroots development with a clear pathway for the women’s teams to return to continental competitions.

The new blueprint includes expanding domestic competitions, featuring a National 7s Circuit for both men and women in key states such as Kano, Lagos, Delta, and Edo, alongside a six‑zone National 15s League culminating in playoffs in Abuja. Youth and school tournaments are also being enhanced to cultivate talent from an early age.

A major goal for the federation is to secure a place for the women’s side in Africa Rugby Women’s Cup Division 1 in Tunisia, restoring Nigeria’s position in continental rankings and opening doors to broader African competition. Hosting the Africa Cup Women’s 7s Regional Qualifier in Lagos or Ogun is also under consideration.

Officials emphasized that the 2026 strategy is designed not only to improve performance but also to enhance coaching, officiating, and sports administration through accredited training courses and community engagement. This holistic approach aims to build a competitive and sustainable women’s rugby programme capable of challenging across Africa.
