Activist Challenges New Police Chief to Tackle Extortion and Misuse of Power

Human rights advocate Deji Adeyanju has called on the newly appointed acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to urgently reform policing practices across the country amid rising concerns over misconduct.

Adeyanju urged the police leadership to address persistent allegations of extortion by officers, noting that such actions continue to erode public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

He also raised concerns about the alleged misuse of the Cybercrimes Act, claiming it has been applied in ways that silence critics and unfairly target individuals, rather than serve justice.

In addition, he criticized the heavy deployment of officers for VIP protection, arguing that it diverts manpower away from public safety duties and weakens effective policing across communities.
