Abia State Introduces Cashless Payment for Green Shuttle Buses

Abia State has rolled out a new cashless fare system for its Green Shuttle buses as part of efforts to modernize public transport and make commuting easier for residents. Passengers are now required to use a digital payment card instead of paying with cash when boarding shuttle buses across the state.

Under the new system, commuters will use the Abia Connect Card, or “Abia State Card,” by tapping it on electronic payment terminals installed on buses. The initiative aims to reduce delays, eliminate disputes over change, and minimize the handling of cash on public transport.

Officials described the rollout as a key step toward improving efficiency, boosting transparency in fare collection, and providing a smoother travel experience for the public. The first payment card is being offered free to residents and can be collected at designated shuttle terminals or official agent locations.

Users are required to present state identification details to obtain the card. Once onboard, they simply tap the card on a reader to validate their payment before the bus departs. The government says this move is part of a broader strategy to embrace digital systems and enhance service delivery in the state’s transportation network.
