The Centre for Journalism and Investigative Development (CJID) has raised serious concerns following the reported assault of an NTA reporter by a security aide to the Niger State Governor.

The incident reportedly took place during the reporter’s coverage of official events in the state capital. Sources indicate that tensions escalated over access to certain areas, resulting in a physical confrontation that left the journalist hurt.

CJID condemned the attack as an unacceptable infringement on press freedom and stressed that journalists should never be subjected to intimidation or violence while performing their duties. The organization called on authorities to investigate the matter promptly and ensure justice is served.

The media rights group also urged the Niger State government to implement safeguards for journalists covering governmental activities. Officials, they said, must recognize that protecting journalists is essential to maintaining transparency and accountability in governance.

The assault underscores persistent challenges faced by reporters across Nigeria, highlighting the need for stricter measures to secure the safety of media professionals nationwide.
