Experts Raise Alarm Over Possible Earthquake Risk in Nigeria

Professionals in structural engineering and earth sciences have expressed growing concern that Nigeria may not be as safe from seismic activity as widely believed. They warned that the country faces a potential risk of earthquakes, urging authorities and citizens to take precautionary measures.

According to the experts, many buildings across the country are not constructed to withstand ground vibrations, leaving millions of people vulnerable in the event of a tremor. They stressed that weak enforcement of building standards and poor structural designs could worsen the impact if an earthquake occurs.

The warning follows increasing discussions about earth tremors recorded in parts of Nigeria in recent years. Specialists noted that although earthquakes are not frequent in the country, the presence of fault lines and geological movements means the risk cannot be ignored.

They called on the government to strengthen monitoring systems, enforce strict building regulations, and raise public awareness about disaster preparedness. Without proactive steps, they cautioned, even a mild seismic event could lead to significant damage and loss of life.

Experts also emphasized the need for improved urban planning and regular structural assessments, especially in densely populated cities, to reduce potential hazards associated with future seismic activity.
