A fire broke out on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at a parking garage within the industrial complex of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.
The blaze affected a multi-storey facility used for storing test and decommissioned vehicles. Videos circulating on social media showed thick plumes of black smoke rising into the air as flames spread across parts of the building.
Emergency responders, including firefighters and police, were quickly deployed to the scene and were able to bring the situation under control.
In a statement, BYD confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were recorded. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and remains under investigation.
Experts note that fires involving electric vehicles can be difficult to contain due to the nature of battery systems, which may burn for extended periods and sometimes reignite.
Following the incident, BYD’s shares experienced a slight dip of 0.6%. The company’s global headquarters is located in Shenzhen’s Pingshan district, where the fire occurred.
