The Assemblies of God Nigeria has strongly condemned a violent incident that occurred at one of its congregations in Ughelli, Delta State, calling for a thorough investigation into the attack.
In a statement issued by the church’s leadership, the incident was described as disturbing and unacceptable, as it left a senior pastor and members of his family injured while also causing emotional distress within the congregation.
According to the church, the attack was allegedly carried out by individuals wearing uniforms associated with the Royal Rangers, a youth arm of the ministry. However, the leadership clarified that the group is known for discipline and spiritual activities, and does not engage in violence or unlawful actions.
The church further stated that initial findings suggest that the recognised leadership of the Royal Rangers did not authorise or have prior knowledge of the incident. It stressed that those responsible may have acted independently or falsely represented the organisation.
Authorities have since been notified, with security agencies already working to identify those involved and determine how the uniforms were used in the attack. The church also confirmed that it has begun its own internal review to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Reassuring members and the public, the leadership pledged that the matter would be handled transparently, with those found culpable expected to face appropriate consequences.
