The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has successfully conducted its State Congress, producing a new set of executives led by Hon. Peter Azubuike as State Chairman and Chuks Akanmadu as State Secretary.
The congress, held on Saturday, April 25, at the party secretariat in Umuahia, was widely described as peaceful, credible, and driven by consensus. Other key officials elected include Emenike Iroegbu as Publicity Secretary, Joy Ngozi Anyanwu as Treasurer, and Ben Ikechukwu Oti as Organising Secretary, alongside members of the State Working Committee.
Speaking at the event, Governor Alex Otti described the exercise as a sign of unity and a fresh beginning for the party in Abia State. He assured the new leadership of continued support from his administration, emphasizing the need for cohesion and collective progress.
“This marks the beginning of a new era where everyone works together for the growth of the party. We will continue to support the party and its leadership to ensure a smooth take-off,” the governor said.
Governor Otti also commended the Congress Organising Committee for conducting a seamless process and praised former State Chairman, Emmanuel Oti, for maintaining stability during the party’s internal challenges. He urged both the outgoing and incoming executives to collaborate in strengthening the party.
Earlier, Chairman of the State Congress Committee, Hon. Acho Obioma, noted that the congress followed successful ward and local government exercises, all conducted peacefully and transparently through consensus arrangements.
Similarly, State Congress Coordinator, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, confirmed that the process complied with the Constitution, Electoral Act, and party guidelines, describing it as part of preparations for the party’s national convention.
In his remarks, the newly elected State Chairman, Hon. Peter Azubuike, pledged to expand the party’s reach across Abia and secure victory in all parts of the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We will mobilise support at the grassroots and ensure the party remains strong and dominant across the state,” he said.
The congress attracted top stakeholders and members of the party from across Abia State, highlighting a renewed sense of unity and purpose within the Labour Party.
