Abia State —
A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Abia State, taking a decisive step by purchasing the party’s nomination form ahead of other aspirants.
Kalu’s move, widely regarded as strategic and symbolic, positions him as the first aspirant within the APC in Abia State to signal official interest in the forthcoming primaries. Political observers note that such an early declaration is often aimed at consolidating grassroots support and demonstrating preparedness for the intense political process ahead.
Speaking shortly after completing the process, Kalu described his action as a “valiant step” underscoring his unwavering commitment to offering purposeful leadership to the people of Abia State. He emphasized that his ambition is rooted in a clear vision to reposition the state for sustainable growth, economic revitalization, and inclusive governance.
Addressing his supporters and political allies, the APC stalwart urged them to remain resolute and unshaken, assuring them that his political journey is driven by conviction and not subject to withdrawal midway.
“I did not start this journey only to back down for anybody halfway,” he declared, in what many interpret as a strong message of determination and resilience in the face of potential political pressures.
Kalu also used the opportunity to express gratitude to key stakeholders within the party structure, including the Abia State Working Committee and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC, for their leadership and commitment to strengthening the party’s internal democracy. He commended the efforts of party leaders at both state and national levels for steering the APC in what he described as “the right direction.”
The development has begun to generate significant interest within Abia’s political landscape, as party faithful and analysts alike anticipate a potentially competitive primary season. Kalu’s early entry is expected to set the tone for other aspirants who may soon declare their intentions.
As the 2027 electoral cycle gradually gathers momentum, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu’s bold step signals not only his personal political ambition but also a broader reawakening within the APC in Abia State, as the party seeks to position itself as a formidable contender in the race for the state’s top office.
