Former Minister of Interior and interim National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has expressed strong confidence that the ADC will defeat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure, Ondo State, Aregbesola, a former ally of President Tinubu, urged party members to set aside their personal interests and unite behind the party’s mission to reclaim power. He stressed that collective unity is key to ousting the current administration, stating, “If we unite, we won’t be defeated in the elections.”
The former Osun State governor revealed that the ADC is rapidly gaining traction, with backing from major political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi, as part of a broader coalition to challenge Tinubu’s leadership.
Meanwhile, Professor Pat Utomi, convener of Nigeria’s shadow government, has thrown his support behind the growing alliance of opposition parties, endorsing the coalition’s effort to form a united front ahead of the 2027 polls.
Also at the meeting, Gbenga Edema, governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Ondo State, accused the APC of peddling propaganda to distract from the rising momentum of the opposition. He affirmed the coalition’s decision to adopt the ADC as its political platform and dismissed concerns about ongoing legal issues, noting they pose no threat to the coalition’s plans.
Adding his voice, political strategist Akin Akinbobola decried the worsening state of the nation, pointing to insecurity, hunger, and systemic collapse. He called on Nigerians with progressive ideals to join forces under the ADC-led coalition to rescue the country.
According to Akinbobola, the coalition is growing rapidly, with over 10 political parties already involved. He described it as a political “tsunami” in the making, emphasizing the need for internal harmony and inclusivity as the coalition takes shape to confront the 2027 elections head-on.
