In an official statement signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen jointly directed that all parliamentary proceedings be suspended until Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

“To honour his legacy and dedicated service to the nation, I have been directed by the Senate President and the Speaker of the House to inform members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are hereby suspended until Tuesday, July 22, 2025,” the statement read.

Lawmakers were urged to adjust their official and personal schedules to enable full participation in the late president’s burial rites and tribute events.

The leadership of the National Assembly also conveyed its condolences to the nation and Buhari’s family. “On behalf of all members and staff of the National Assembly, the leadership of both chambers extends heartfelt sympathies to the government and people of Nigeria, the government and people of Katsina State, as well as his wife, children, and the entire Buhari family,” the statement added.

President Buhari, who served as both a military head of state and a two-term democratically elected leader, was praised for his steadfast commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his reputation for integrity.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to national cohesion and his personal honesty. May Almighty Allah grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus,” Ogunlana concluded.
