The 2025 National Para-Badminton Championship in Umuahia, Abia State, is reaching a thrilling crescendo as top para-athletes from across Nigeria battle for national glory and a shot at international recognition.
Day 2 of the championship delivered high-octane action, with 2024 Summer Paralympics bronze medalist Eniola Bolaji Miriam of Kwara State advancing to the semifinals of the Women’s Singles SL3 category. Joining her in the final four are Joy Oriemezie (Imo), Odinaka Uwalaka (Abia), and Anna Nyam (Plateau). However, Abia’s Blessing Iroanya exited the tournament after finishing at the bottom of her group.
The competition continues on Day 3, Wednesday, with decisive classification rounds, quarterfinals, and semifinals scheduled to take place at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.
Speaking after the day’s matches, Mr. Tunde Kazeem, Technical Director of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, praised the championship’s rising standards, highlighting the improved skill levels and intensity on display. He commended the Abia State Badminton Association and the state government for providing a world-class environment, describing the event as the best since the inception of Para-Badminton in Nigeria.
Zamfara State’s Director of Sports and former national coach, George Haruna Shitta, noted that this marked Zamfara’s debut at the national para-badminton stage. He expressed optimism about the potential of his team and the development opportunities presented by the tournament.
Abia State Badminton Association Chairman, Mr. Abel Sunday, revealed that this year’s edition also serves as a prelude to the forthcoming International Para-Badminton Championship, which Abia is set to host for the first time. He expressed satisfaction with the overall performance, especially of newcomers who are making strong impressions against established players.
As round-robin matches conclude, anticipation builds toward the championship finals set for Thursday, July 17, when new champions will emerge in what is shaping up to be a landmark moment for Nigerian para-badminton.
