Detention of Nnamdi Kanu Politically Motivated, Not Legal

Prominent human rights lawyer, Barrister Christopher Chidera, has criticized the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), calling it unjustified and politically driven rather than grounded in law.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Chidera argued that Kanu’s incarceration stems from his bold criticism of the Nigerian government, rather than any proven legal offense. “This is not about law—it’s about silencing a voice that speaks truth to power,” he said. He questioned why the government has failed to bring formal charges against Kanu for controversial claims, such as the allegation that former President Muhammadu Buhari had died. “If that was misinformation, why hasn’t he been prosecuted for it?” he asked.

Chidera further claimed that Kanu’s prolonged detention is a calculated attempt to diminish his influence among the Igbo people. “They underestimate the depth of loyalty he commands,” he said. “Kanu doesn’t rely on propaganda—he’s earned his support through truth, consistency, and personal sacrifice.”

The lawyer also broadened the discussion, urging Africans to embrace unity and critical thinking, rather than blaming colonialism for the continent’s challenges. “Africa’s biggest curse isn’t colonialism—it’s our mental complacency,” he said. “Until we learn to question, reason, and demand facts over emotion, we remain our own oppressors.”

Chidera condemned a recent article from a leading online platform that mocked Kanu’s efforts as “hilarious propaganda,” calling it a “malicious piece” designed to undermine the activist’s credibility and divide his base. He urged the public and media to defend the right to dissent and safeguard fundamental freedoms, especially the freedom of expression.
