The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has sounded the alarm over widespread outbreaks of infectious diseases across the country, warning of serious public health risks if urgent action isn’t taken. The affected diseases include :
– Cholera: Reported in 34 states, with Zamfara accounting for 32% of suspected cases. Other affected states include Bayelsa, Adamawa, Delta, Lagos, and Rivers.
– Dengue Fever: Confirmed in Edo State between June 9 and 13, 2025, with the Aedes mosquito being the primary vector.
– Yellow Fever: Confirmed in Abia, Anambra, Edo, Ekiti, Lagos, and Rivers states, with seven verified cases. The NCDC emphasizes that the yellow fever vaccine is the most effective prevention strategy.
– Mpox: Ongoing threat, causing fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.
– Diphtheria: Ongoing threat, leading to severe throat infections and breathing difficulties.

To curb the spread of these diseases, the NCDC recommends :
– Eliminating Mosquito Breeding Sites*: Regularly clean up trash and eliminate standing water around homes.
– Using Insecticide-Treated Nets: Protect yourself from mosquito bites while sleeping.
– Applying Insect Repellents: Use mosquito repellents to prevent bites.
– Maintaining High Hygiene Standards: Practice good hygiene, especially in cholera-prone areas.
– Avoiding Self-Medication: Seek medical attention promptly if symptoms arise.

The NCDC urges citizens to take preventive steps and healthcare workers to remain alert, maintaining a high index of suspicion for emerging diseases
