Abia State Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, has urged the Management of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), to implement an anonymous reporting system to address the growing insecurity and social vices within the institution.
Engr. Emetu gave the charge during a courtesy visit to his office by members of the University’s Governing Board and senior management staff. He referenced the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), as a successful example, where such a system has helped expose cultism, sexual harassment, and the illegal sale of academic materials by lecturers.
He recommended that ABSU adopt a similar model to enhance internal intelligence gathering and ensure accountability among students and staff. He further suggested that parents be required to co-sign final student clearance forms, thereby vouching for their wards’ character.
The Deputy Governor also proposed the return of Man O’ War personnel to hostels and off-campus areas to help identify cult members and others involved in deviant acts. He stressed the need for a deliberate and structured security framework to rid the University of criminal elements and attain up to 70% campus peace.
He assured the University Management of Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to resolving some of the institution’s major infrastructural challenges, including the complete fencing of the campus and rehabilitation of access roads.
Speaking earlier, Pro-Chancellor Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu commended the Governor’s interventions, noting that insecurity at ABSU reflects a broader societal problem.
