Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Abians and residents through robust investments in healthcare and other people-centered initiatives.

Governor Otti gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Optometrists Association (NOA), who are in the state for their 48th annual conference and election.

“The average Nigerian is struggling, and whatever we can do to make life more meaningful and easier for them, this government will support it,” Otti said. “Everything government does should center on the welfare of the people. When people are complaining, the government must revisit its purpose because the essence of governance is people’s well-being.”

He emphasized that welfare encompasses both health and security, adding that his government sees healthcare as a foundation for societal welfare.

While commending the association for choosing Abia as host for its national event, he described the conference theme, “Optometry in a Changing World,” as timely and relevant. He assured the delegation of the state government’s continued support and hospitality during their stay.

Highlighting the administration’s efforts in the health sector, the Governor cited the creation of the Abia State Eyecare Management Bureau, making Abia one of the few—if not the only—states with such a dedicated institution. He disclosed that the Bureau has conducted free eye screenings, treatments, and surgeries for thousands of residents across all 17 LGAs.

Responding to the association’s call for support in securing legislative backing for the decentralization of the National Vision Centre, Governor Otti pledged to follow up with the relevant bill at the National Assembly. He also encouraged the visitors to explore the state, particularly Aba, the South-East’s commercial hub, to witness the state’s transformation first-hand.

Earlier, NOA President Dr. Chimezirim Anderson thanked Governor Otti for the significant appointments of optometrists in his administration, including Dr. Maureen Aghukwa as Commissioner for Women Affairs and Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi as Administrator of the Eyecare Bureau.

He commended the Governor for the state’s rapid development and noted that Abia now boasts the highest number of eyecare vision centres in Nigeria. Dr. Anderson appealed for state support to obtain legislative approval for the decentralization bill and requested a parcel of land to establish a regional office in Abia.

In her vote of thanks, Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi applauded the NOA for choosing Abia for its national conference, describing it as a testament to the secure and welcoming environment the Otti administration has created.

Quoting Governor Otti, she remarked, “Capital is like a woman—it goes where it is attracted,” and noted that over a thousand optometrists are currently in the state, with all hotels in Umuahia fully booked, signifying the economic boost the event has brought.

The visit was graced by top government officials, including Dr. Aghukwa and Dr. Emeka-Obasi, who reaffirmed their dedication to the Governor’s healthcare agenda.
