Priscilla Otti, Women Optometrists of Nigeria Take Free Eye Care to Olokoro

The wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti has advised people to make regular eye check a priority to avert any form of eye challenge that may lead to blindness.

Mrs Otti stated this at Ahiaukwu civil hall Olokoro in Umuahia South LGA of Abia State, during a free Vision screening outreach organised by Women Optometrists in Nigeria WON in conjunction with the first lady of Abia State, Mrs Priscilla Otti major donor, Essilor, Fidson Healthcare plc and Altinez Vision limited.

The free eye medical outreach also featured Vision screening, dispensing of Ocular drugs, dispensing of Ophthalmic glasses, counseling etc.

Mrs Otti who was represented by the commissioner for women affairs, Dr Mrs Maureen Aghukwa disclosed that Glaucoma can appear without giving signs and frowned when some people report to hospital for eye treatment when the doctors cannot restore their sight. She also warned people to stop attributing eye problems to evil manipulation.

Dr. Mrs. Maureen Aghukwa who is a member of the Women Optometrists in Nigeria, added that the Women Optometrists are here in Abia for a national conference.

She said that any state that is hosting their national conference, the women would do something for a particular community in that place, which brought them to Olokoro.

“And so, with the aid of Her Excellency, we went to Olokoro today to do free eye screening for members of the community”.

Dr Aghaukwa further commended the wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs Otti for her continued support and courage for women and the vulnerable in the state.

The National president of Women Optometrists Association of Nigeria, WON, Dr Ogechi Nwokedi flanked by her vice, Dr Nene thanked Abia State government for treating them well. She applauded the corporation so far.

The president of Women Optometrists Association of Nigeria, WON Abia State chapter, Dr Mary Ademola appreciated the wife of Abia State Governor for supporting their outreach and for supporting them in most of the activities they are doing.

Dr Mary urged the people of Olokoro to sustain their support for Governor Alex Otti and reminded them to do the needful during election so that this good work of the Governor and her excellency will continue.

She added that “this event cannot be complete without the contribution of her colleagues, the women optometrists in Nigeria from different states. In fact, our president, she’s a great woman. In fact, these people, I’m using this opportunity to welcome them.

In fact, some of them came two days, three days to this event and they are all busy right now in the hall doing the work. So I want to welcome them.

According to her, “a lot of things have been put into place to make sure that we have a successful day. So in fact, we are very happy.

Dr Mary Ademola said their target was to see not less than 300 patients. She added that they derive joy giving people free treatment, touch so many people’s lives and also some of the undiagnosed ocular challenges that people have been having without knowing.

“Most of them will be told and we will refer them to eye cleanings that are qualified, you know, where we have qualified professionals, optometrists, our colleagues to, you know, see them subsequently”.

Also contributing, the President General of Olokoro Women’s Federation, Lady Emily Ugwu expressed her joy to the women optometrists for giving to give free eye medical outreach to residents of Olokoro.
” I thank them for their time to do a medical outreach to our women, and not only the women, also men, we are very happy to welcome them”

We are very grateful, you can see the hall was very filled with women and men to come and then take this kind of glory that came to us, we are very happy, and you can see everybody they are very happy too, both our men and our women, and they also thank the wife of the Governor for her support.
