The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a warning to residents of Edo State, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, advising them to relocate to safer grounds due to predictions of worsening flooding in the coming months.

This advisory, delivered on Thursday by the Edo State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Gbenga Agun, through the command’s spokesperson, Efosa Ogbebor, follows forecasts from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA). NIHSA predicts that heavy rainfall and flooding may persist through September and possibly extend into October.

“We urge residents of vulnerable communities to take early action by relocating to safer areas. Acting now can save lives and property,” Agun emphasized. He noted that increased rainfall in July has heightened the risk of flooding, necessitating proactive measures to reduce its potential impact.

To enhance preparedness, the NSCDC has activated its Disaster Management Unit and directed officers in high-risk regions—such as Agenebode, Udaba, Anegbete, Ukpeko, Illushi, and Oji—to commence public awareness campaigns. The corps will also educate residents on flood preparedness, safe evacuation plans, and strategies to minimize losses. Commandant Agun appealed to community leaders, local authorities, and traditional rulers to work with the NSCDC in disseminating safety information and ensuring no community is caught unprepared.
