Tragedy struck on Monday in Itasin-Imobi, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, when a wandering elephant from a nearby government-reserved forest attacked and killed a local farmer, Musa Kalamu.

According to community sources, the wild elephant invaded Mr. Kalamu’s farm and fatally attacked him. Residents revealed that the same elephant has been a recurring menace for over four years, regularly destroying farmlands, fishing equipment, and now causing loss of life.

“This elephant has been tormenting us for years—ruining our crops, wrecking our fishing nets—and now it has claimed a life,” a distraught resident lamented.

In response to the incident, the community has made an urgent appeal to the state government and relevant authorities for intervention to prevent further tragedy.

Confirming the incident, Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun, stated, “Yes, we are aware of the situation and are currently heading to the community.”

Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, also confirmed the event via a WhatsApp message, saying: “The DPO in Ogbere received a report from Itasin community on July 28, 2025, around 4:20 p.m., stating that an elephant had escaped from the government reserve and attacked one Musa Kalamu, who unfortunately died en route to the hospital. The State Forestry Department has been contacted to manage the situation. The area is now calm.”

A graphic video circulating on social media showed the lifeless body of the victim, referred to as “Kala,” with visible injuries reportedly inflicted by the elephant. In the footage, locals could be heard pleading for government intervention, describing the attack as one in a series of dangerous encounters with the animal.
