Earl Osaro Onaiwu, a respected political strategist and the founding Director-General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, has advised Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri to remain steadfast in his allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), amidst growing speculation about a potential defection.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Onaiwu highlighted the significant role the PDP has played in shaping Diri’s political career—from his early days as a Commissioner to his tenure as a Member of the House of Representatives, a Senator, and now a two-term Governor.
“Departing from the party at this stage may be seen as a deviation from the principles that shaped your political rise. The PDP has been the bedrock of your journey, and maintaining loyalty now would underscore your consistency and commitment,” Onaiwu said.
While acknowledging that political realignments are not uncommon in Nigeria’s democracy, he urged political leaders to weigh the long-term consequences of such moves. “Challenges within a party should be addressed through dialogue and reform—core elements of a resilient democratic process,” he noted.
Onaiwu also underscored the PDP’s enduring national presence, its historical relevance, and its well-established institutional structures. He encouraged Governor Diri to remain within the party and conclude his tenure with integrity, stressing that a leader’s decisions at critical junctures often shape their legacy.
