Nationwide Health Disruption Looms as Nurses Begin Seven-Day Warning Strike Wednesday

Hospitals across Nigeria are set to experience widespread disruption starting Wednesday, as nurses under the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Federal Health Institutions Sector, commence a seven-day nationwide warning strike.

The strike will affect 74 federal health institutions, including teaching hospitals, federal medical centres, specialist hospitals, as well as numerous state and primary healthcare facilities.

The nurses are protesting long-standing issues such as poor remuneration, staff shortages, unpaid allowances, lack of safety at work, and non-implementation of previously approved welfare policies.

Speaking at a press briefing, the National Chairman of the association, Comrade Morakinyo Rilwan, revealed that a 15-day ultimatum was issued to the Federal Government on July 14, 2025, with no tangible response received.

He emphasised that nurses are overworked and underpaid, despite working 24-hour shifts and often under dangerous conditions.
