The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Umuahia Branch, in collaboration with the Abia State Technical Committee of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), has begun a comprehensive investigation into the recent structural failure of a three-storey building at the Low-Cost Housing Estate in Umuahia.
Chairman of NSE Umuahia, Engr. Enyinnaya Romanus, disclosed this after a technical assessment of the site, confirming that a full collapse occurred involving one of the blocks in a cluster of multi-storey structures. Following the initial findings, the team recommended the immediate sealing of the site to prevent further risks.
Acting swiftly, the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) sealed off the premises and evacuated occupants, including residents in neighbouring buildings. The two remaining structures are now undergoing detailed structural integrity tests to determine their safety.
Engr. Romanus noted that the impact of the collapse extended to an adjoining building due to insufficient setbacks. He stressed the need for strict enforcement of urban planning laws, particularly setback regulations, which play a vital role in ensuring safety and minimizing damage during emergencies.
According to the NSE/COREN assessment, the building failed in a progressive manner, causing debris to scatter outward and damage surrounding structures, though avoiding a total cascading collapse.
The COREN Technical Committee has launched a forensic engineering investigation to uncover the root causes of the failure, examining factors such as design errors, construction defects, substandard materials, and soil-related issues. A detailed report is expected upon completion of the analysis.
Engr. Romanus emphasized the importance of adhering to engineering standards and regulatory oversight. “This tragic event is a reminder that proper supervision, statutory approvals, and compliance with engineering codes are non-negotiable if we want to prevent future disasters,” he warned.
