Former Senator and human rights advocate, Shehu Sani, has called on the Federal Government to urgently meet the demands of striking nurses and midwives, warning that the ongoing industrial action poses a significant threat to patient care and public health.

Sani made the appeal in a statement shared via his official Facebook page, where he expressed concern over the emotional and financial hardships faced by nurses across the country.

“If a nurse is angry and struggling to pay her rent or her children’s school fees, or is dealing with debt or domestic issues, coming to her for an injection is something else,” he wrote, highlighting how poor working conditions can negatively affect the quality of healthcare delivery.

His remarks come as members of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) continue a nationwide strike to demand improved wages, better working conditions, and professional recognition.

Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the Senate, said the strike reflects a deeper crisis in the country’s healthcare sector and emphasized the need for immediate government intervention to protect both the welfare of health workers and the lives of patients.

“I appeal to the Federal Government to accede to the demands of the striking nurses and midwives,” he stated, adding that fair treatment of healthcare professionals is vital to safeguarding the health and safety of Nigerians.
