Ikwuano Shines as 2nd Governor’s Secondary Schools Unity Games Conclude in Umuahia

The second edition of the Abia State Governor’s Secondary Schools Unity Games has come to a thrilling end at the Umuahia Township Stadium, with Ikwuano Local Government Area emerging as overall champion.

Ikwuano athletes topped the medal table with an impressive haul of 131 medals. Umunneochi LGA followed as first runner-up with 74 medals, while the previous year’s champions, Umuahia North LGA, finished third with 53 medals.

At the closing ceremony, Governor Alex Otti, represented by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, commended the young athletes for their performances and urged them not to downplay the significance of their achievements.

“There is a seed of greatness in you. What you have started today in a small way could become a great story tomorrow,” he said, encouraging the athletes to remain dedicated to their sporting pursuits.

The Governor also challenged local government mayors to invest in sports infrastructure to nurture young talents and create enabling environments for youth development through sports.

He thanked the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, local government mayors, and sports administrators for their contributions to the success of the event. He further assured that next year’s edition would be better organized, with an improved stadium to host the games.

Also speaking at the event, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwobilor Ananaba, expressed excitement over the discoveries made during the competition, saying several promising talents had been identified. He pledged that the state government would support their development into professional athletes who could represent the state and Nigeria on larger platforms.

In an interview, the State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, praised the enthusiastic participation and the competitive spirit displayed during the event. He noted the remarkable shift in outcomes compared to the previous edition.

“Last year, Umuahia North won, being an urban area. But this time, Ikwuano, a semi-urban LGA, took the lead. It shows real growth and healthy competition,” George said.

The event drew dignitaries, sports enthusiasts, and students from across the 17 LGAs, highlighting the growing momentum of grassroots sports in the state.
