In response to the 2025 flood warnings issued by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the Abia State Ministry of Environment, in partnership with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other disaster management stakeholders, has announced a comprehensive statewide flood sensitization campaign.

The campaign aims to reduce the anticipated impact of flooding by targeting high-risk areas across Abia State. It will focus on community engagement and education on flood preparedness, proper waste disposal, drainage upkeep, and safe desilting methods.

Scheduled to commence on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the sensitization visits will cover multiple locations, including Ukwa East and West, Aba South and North, Arochukwu, Umuahia South and North, Isiala Ngwa South and North, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Ikwuano.

Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, urged residents to actively participate and adopt preventive measures to mitigate flood risks. “Prevention is better than cure,” he emphasized, calling for collective responsibility in protecting the environment and safeguarding communities.
