An Ohio couple has made headlines after welcoming a baby boy conceived from an embryo frozen more than three decades ago.

Lindsey Pierce, 35, and her husband Tim Pierce, 34, from London, Ohio, celebrated the birth of their son, Thaddeus, on July 26. The extraordinary birth was reported by MIT Technology Review.

After struggling to conceive for seven years, the Pierces turned to embryo adoption, a process where couples adopt embryos preserved from earlier IVF procedures. The embryo used in Thaddeus’s birth was originally created in 1994.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, IVF involves stimulating ovulation, extracting eggs, fertilizing them with sperm in a lab, and either transferring the resulting embryo into a uterus or freezing it for later use.

Following a successful embryo transfer, Lindsey became pregnant, and the couple’s long wait for parenthood came to a joyful end.

Commenting on the birth, pediatrician and medical contributor Dr. Alok Patel, who was not involved in the case, noted that the age of a frozen embryo does not pose significant risks when proper freezing and screening protocols are followed.

“If embryos are frozen and thawed correctly, they can be just as viable as those created today,” Dr. Patel said.
