Much of Scotland is set to face widespread disruption as Storm Floris brings heavy rain and powerful winds of up to 85mph, prompting transport delays, event cancellations, and safety warnings.
Network Rail announced that several rail lines across Scotland will be closed from 12pm on Monday, while remaining routes will operate on reduced timetables with significantly longer journey times expected.
Western coastal regions are forecast to be hardest hit, though the storm’s reach is already being felt across the country. Edinburgh, in the midst of its world-renowned festival season, is also preparing for severe weather. Edinburgh City Council confirmed that Princes Street Gardens will be closed on both Monday and Tuesday, leading to the cancellation of several Fringe Festival events.
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo cancelled its Monday performance, citing safety concerns. In North Berwick, several events at the Fringe By The Sea festival were also scrapped.
ScotRail urged residents to secure outdoor items like trampolines and tents to prevent debris from falling onto railway tracks. Ferry operator CalMac has issued early cancellations, with further disruption expected across ferry, air, road, and bridge networks.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: “Across the warning area, many inland regions are likely to experience gusts of 40-50mph, while higher ground and coastal areas could see gusts reaching 60-70mph. There is a small chance of isolated gusts hitting 85mph.”
While the most intense winds are expected on Monday afternoon and evening, the Met Office cautioned that “uncertainty remains” regarding the exact path and intensity of Storm Floris.
Authorities are urging the public to monitor weather updates closely, avoid unnecessary travel, and take all necessary precautions as the storm moves across the region.
