The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has strongly criticized the election of Bishop Cherry Vann as the Archbishop of Wales, citing her openly lesbian lifestyle as a clear deviation from biblical principles.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, described Vann’s elevation as a further step away from the historic Christian faith and Anglican orthodoxy. He expressed deep concern over what he sees as the Church in Wales abandoning foundational biblical teachings.

“The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) condemns, unequivocally rejects, and will not recognise the election of Vann as Archbishop of Wales,” Ndukuba stated. “We remain committed to the authority of Scripture, the historic creeds, the call to evangelism, and a life of holiness.”

The Church of Nigeria also called on faithful Anglicans to distance themselves from any church leadership that compromises on biblical truth and urged realignment with like-minded Anglican bodies such as the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON).

“We call on true believers within the Anglican fold to denounce and reject such compromises, and to realign with faithful Anglican remnants across the globe,” the statement read.

The Church urged Christians to pray for the Church in Wales and warned that without repentance and a return to godliness, it risks becoming irrelevant in God’s plan for the people of Wales. The statement also expressed hope that the Church of England would not follow a similar path.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Bishop Cherry Vann’s election on July 3 has been met with widespread controversy within parts of the global Anglican community.
