Johannesburg, The Gauteng Department of Health has announced the launch of a Measles-Rubella Mass Vaccination Campaign, set to begin on Tuesday and run until 12 September. The initiative comes as a response to an ongoing measles outbreak in the province, which has seen over 370 confirmed cases since the start of the year.

The campaign aims to immunize more than four million children between the ages of six months and 15 years across all five of Gauteng’s health districts.

The official launch will take place at Steve Biko Primary School in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg.

Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to support the effort by completing and returning consent forms distributed through schools and crèches.

“Vaccination is safe, free, and proven to prevent severe complications and disabilities caused by measles and rubella,” said Modiba.

The department is calling for widespread cooperation to ensure the success of the campaign and protect children from preventable diseases.
