The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to political parties against initiating early public campaigns for the 2027 General Elections, stating that such moves contravene the Electoral Act.

Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, emphasized this during an interview in Abuja while addressing concerns over subtle early campaigns and poster distributions across the country.

He cited Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates that public campaigns by political parties must commence no earlier than 150 days before polling day and conclude 24 hours prior. Additionally, Section 95(1) requires that all election campaigns adhere to INEC’s stipulated guidelines.

While acknowledging citizens’ rights to political discourse, Oyekanmi stressed that open solicitation of votes or organized campaigns at this stage is unlawful. The commission had previously raised the issue during its latest quarterly consultative meeting with political parties, reinforcing the need for strict compliance with electoral regulations.

INEC urged all stakeholders to respect the legal framework to ensure a fair and orderly electoral process ahead of 2027.
