Benin City, Edo State – The Coordinator of the Office of the Edo State First Lady, Edesili Anani, has urged pharmacists to uphold ethical practices and join the fight against drug abuse in Nigeria.

Anani made the appeal during a cocktail event hosted by the Association of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists of Nigeria (AHAPN) at the SIO Event Centre in Benin City’s Government Reserved Area (GRA).

Highlighting the state’s commitment to development under Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, she said, “Edo is a progressive state, and with our new government, we are focused on growth across all sectors, including healthcare. We look forward to partnering with pharmacists to achieve impactful results.”

She emphasized the need for strict monitoring of pharmaceuticals to eliminate substandard and expired drugs, stating, “By ensuring drug quality, pharmacists contribute to a healthier society.”

Anani also called for collaboration between AHAPN and government agencies to combat drug abuse and enhance health education, particularly among youths. She reaffirmed the state’s dedication to improving healthcare under the SHINE Agenda, which prioritizes accessible and quality medical services.

In response, AHAPN Chairman Elechi Oyim commended the Edo State Government for its hospitality and noted that this was the association’s first conference in the state. He praised ongoing infrastructure projects, including the newly built Ramat Park Flyover.

Additionally, the Executive Secretary of the Edo Drug Management and Health Commodity Agency, Kenny Okojie, applauded Anani’s advocacy for women in governance, revealing that over 15 women currently hold political appointments, with eight leading ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

The event underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in tackling drug abuse and advancing healthcare in Edo State.
