Police Warn Against Lobbying as Force Defends Integrity of Promotion Process

The Nigeria Police Force has raised alarm over increasing lobbying and unofficial appeals directed at the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission by some officers seeking special promotions.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Muyiwa Adejobi, described the trend as troubling, particularly following the recent approval of accelerated promotions for select officers who earned them through outstanding service.

Adejobi clarified that the accelerated promotions were not handed out arbitrarily but were the result of a structured and merit-based reward system established by the police leadership. He noted that only officers who demonstrated exceptional bravery, professional excellence, and dedication to duty were considered and found eligible based on established criteria.

“The latest promotion exercise should not be misconstrued as a blanket or indiscriminate promotion scheme,” Adejobi emphasized.

Reacting to reports by an online platform alleging arbitrary promotions within the Force, the police spokesperson urged the public to disregard such claims, labeling them as false, misleading, and aimed at discrediting the integrity of the Force’s promotion system.

He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to merit, transparency, and due process in all personnel decisions.

The Force also issued a stern warning to officers against attempting to influence the promotion process through lobbying or other unofficial channels, stressing that such actions are unethical, violate the principles of professionalism and meritocracy, and will attract serious disciplinary consequences.

The statement concluded with a call for all personnel to remain committed, disciplined, and dedicated to their responsibilities while upholding the values of honourable service to the nation.
