The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with Nigeria’s disability community in combating corruption, eliminating discrimination, and promoting equal opportunities for all citizens. This pledge was made during a strategic partnership meeting held in Abuja with the Pioneers Ad Hoc Consortium of Nigeria’s Disability Civil Rights Movement.
Representing the ICPC Chairman, Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), the Commission’s Secretary, Mr. Clifford Oparaodu, emphasized the ICPC’s inclusive recruitment policy, noting that persons with disabilities are already part of its workforce. “ICPC does not discriminate in its hiring or operations. Every credible petition is assessed based on its merit, regardless of the petitioner’s background or vulnerability,” Oparaodu stated. He also welcomed the consortium’s proposals and expressed readiness to pursue joint efforts such as addressing corruption in disability-related institutions, enhancing whistleblower engagement, and improving accessibility.
Lady Omotunde Ellen Thompson, Co-Founder and Chairperson of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), outlined the pressing issues facing the disability community, including corruption, neglect, and systemic barriers. She praised the ICPC for its empathy, professionalism, and tangible support during court processes but urged for further action to guarantee dignity and protection for persons with disabilities. Among her recommendations were the establishment of a Department of Veteran Affairs to cater to law enforcement and persons with disabilities, timely salary disbursements, better healthcare, and strengthened security.
Additional proposals included appointing a dedicated disability desk officer, implementing specialized training, conducting financial audits on disability-related projects, and ensuring inclusive policy dialogues. The association submitted a formal petition and proposed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to solidify the collaboration. The ICPC concluded the meeting by reaffirming its resolve to act on all valid petitions and work toward meaningful outcomes. “We’re optimistic about what this partnership can achieve and are committed to delivering impactful results for the disability community,” Oparaodu said.
