The Federal Government has confirmed the suspension of 13,597,057 social media accounts over offensive content and violations of the Code of Practice 2024 across platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

The disclosure was contained in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, jointly submitted by major tech companies including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok. The code—issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC)—sets clear guidelines to curb harmful online activity.

According to the report, 58,909,112 offensive posts were taken down during the review period, while users filed 754,629 complaints. It further revealed that 420,439 contents initially removed were later restored following successful user appeals.

In a statement on Wednesday, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, praised the level of compliance demonstrated by the platforms. She emphasized that the initiative is designed to promote a safer, healthier, and more responsible digital space for Nigerians.
