President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians living abroad to play an active role in the country’s development by contributing their expertise, resources, and influence to build a stronger, more prosperous nation.

Speaking on Thursday during an interactive session with members of the Nigerian community in Japan, held at the Kahala Hotel and Resort in Yokohama, the President emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in nation-building. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD).

According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the event brought together Nigerian professionals, entrepreneurs, and students from various fields. President Tinubu highlighted key achievements of his administration and reiterated his commitment to sustained economic growth and national unity.

The President expressed his delight at meeting what he described as a dynamic and diverse representation of Nigeria abroad. He assured the diaspora community that his administration is creating an enabling environment where all Nigerians—at home and abroad—can thrive.

He invited Senator John Enoh, Minister of State for Industry, and Khalil Suleiman Halilu, Executive Vice Chairman of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), to outline government initiatives and progress.

“Leadership is about thinking and doing—translating vision into action,” Tinubu said. He cited improvements in the passport issuance process and ongoing reforms aimed at fostering stability, unity, and economic opportunity.

The President encouraged Nigerians in the diaspora to consider returning home and investing in the country’s future. “Your contribution is needed. If you stay away, who will build Nigeria?” he asked.

He stressed that national development requires partnership between government and citizens—both local and abroad. He urged the diaspora to serve as ambassadors of Nigeria, promoting the country’s image and potential.

“Being Nigerian is more than holding a passport. It’s about your character and your commitment to the country’s progress,” Tinubu added, cautioning against negative portrayals that hinder investment and growth.

On the economic front, Tinubu assured that his administration has stabilised key indicators and is implementing reforms to unlock investment opportunities and create jobs. He also noted progress in reducing medical tourism through healthcare infrastructure upgrades and increased access to quality services.

Members of the Nigerian community in Japan expressed their support for the President’s reforms and pledged to contribute more actively to Nigeria’s economic and social transformation.

Wale Tinubu, the President’s nephew, also shared insights on how government policies are improving business competitiveness, attracting investment, and enhancing capital market performance.

Emeka Ebogota, President of the Nigerian Union in Japan, thanked the President for the engagement and pledged continued support. Other notable attendees included John Ologbotsere, a Japanese national award recipient; entrepreneur Kingsley Kabuyashi; and a cross-section of Nigerian professionals, students, and investors.

Accompanying the President were top government officials including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, Solid Minerals Minister Dele Alake, Budget Minister Atiku Bagudu, and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed, among others.
