The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has rejected the Federal Government’s plan to outsource quality assurance in polytechnics, describing the policy as dangerous to the future of technical education in Nigeria.

At a news conference in Bauchi, ASUP Zonal Coordinator, Zone B, Mr. Lumpye Simji, said the move undermines the mandate of the National Board for Technical Education and could compromise academic standards. He labelled the plan “ethically flawed and economically unsound.”

ASUP is also demanding the release of the Peculiar Academic Allowance circular, payment of salary arrears, improved infrastructure funding, implementation of promotions, and an end to discrimination against HND holders.

The union has given government a 21-day ultimatum, which expires in early September. If unmet, ASUP Chairman at Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, Mr. Hussaini Yaro, warned members may withdraw services, triggering a nationwide strike.
