Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emphasized that his recent political shift is focused on fostering a collective movement for Nigeria’s national renewal, rather than personal aspirations for the presidency.

Addressing an affirmation ceremony in Lagos on Saturday for new members joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku, who ran for the presidency under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, articulated his vision for a better Nigeria. The event welcomed prominent figures from both the PDP and Labour Party who officially announced their membership in the ADC.

Speaking on Atiku’s behalf, Prof. Ola Olateju from Achievers University, Owo, explained that the political landscape necessitates a platform that prioritizes the interests of the nation. “Atiku Abubakar’s plan is not solely to become president but to foster a government that can effectively serve the Nigerian people,” Olateju stated.

He further clarified that the ADC is not just a political party; it represents a movement of Nigerians striving for a brighter future. “We need a new beginning in Nigeria, and that’s what Atiku is championing,” he added.

Atiku underscored that pressing issues facing Nigerians, such as the recent removal of fuel subsidies and escalating inflation, require a leadership focused on citizen welfare instead of personal political ambitions.

“It’s not about whether he must be president; it’s about ensuring Nigeria can deliver for its people as they deserve,” Olateju asserted, echoing Atiku’s sentiments.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Atiku confirmed that ADC’s presidential candidate will be chosen through an open and fair contest. “We are supportive of whoever emerges through this process; it is crucial that everyone has the right to contend without any imposition,” he stated.

The ceremony also saw notable figures such as Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, alongside former Lagos PDP chairmen Chief Muritala Ashorobi and Retired Capt. Tunji Shelle, joining the ADC. They were welcomed by national leaders of the ADC, including National Secretary Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and State Chairman George Ashiru.

The gathering marks a significant shift in the political landscape, highlighting a growing coalition seeking to address Nigeria’s challenges through renewed leadership and collective effort.
