The immediate past Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, has officially joined the Labour Party (LP) along with his supporters and political groups across Abia North and beyond.

The formal reception took place on Saturday, August 23, at Etitiama Primary School, Nkporo, Ohafia LGA, where Governor Alex Otti warmly welcomed Oko Chukwu and his followers, assuring them of equal rights within the party.

“This is a party that does not discriminate. There is no difference between those who joined in 2022 and those joining today. As soon as you become a member, you enjoy the same rights and opportunities as every other member,” Otti said.

The Governor also announced the award of contract for the reconstruction of the Abiriba–Nkporo road, promising durable infrastructure and improved quality of work. He further revealed plans to upgrade Nkporo schools into smart schools, stressing that education remains the cornerstone of his administration.

In his remarks, Oko Chukwu said his decision to dump the PDP for Labour Party was driven by Governor Otti’s sincerity and impactful governance across various sectors. He declared that “PDP has closed shop in Abia,” pledging to mobilise political support for the Governor and formally handing over his political structure, Abia Vision Rangers, to the LP.

The event also witnessed the defection of several notable PDP members, including Ohafia LGA Chairman, Chief Egesigh Eze Azu, former PDP State Woman Leader, Christie Emenike, and former Arochukwu LGA Chairman, Princely Kingsley Ngunu. They cited Otti’s visible achievements as their reason for embracing the Labour Party.

Acting State Chairman of LP, Sir Emmanuel Nwaeze Oti, attributed the growing influx into the party to Governor Otti’s transformative leadership, which, he said, has positively impacted lives across Abia North, Central, and South.

The ceremony, which featured the presentation of the LP flag to Oko Chukwu, was graced by top government officials including the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, the SSG, Chief of Staff, Commissioners, as well as dignitaries and pro-groups from across the state.
