The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State to take urgent and decisive steps to halt the killings allegedly carried out by armed herdsmen in rural communities.
This comes after suspected Fulani herders attacked Amakohia-Ubi community in Owerri West Local Government Area, killing a vigilante leader, Monday Nwaozuzu (alias Ojo Ola), leaving several others missing and some wounded. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday evening, triggered panic and forced residents to flee to neighbouring communities for safety.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA condemned the killings and urged Uzodimma to enforce existing laws prohibiting open grazing and the destruction of farmlands by herders.
The group also demanded that the Imo State Police Commissioner provide an update on efforts to apprehend the perpetrators of recent attacks, including the killing of over 20 residents in Arondizuogu, Ideato North LGA, weeks ago.
HURIWA criticised the police for failing to make progress despite acknowledging knowledge of the assailants. It accused security agencies of abandoning their constitutional duty to protect lives and property, warning that residents may resort to self-defence if government continues to fail in its responsibilities.
According to villagers, the clash began when local vigilantes attempted to stop herders from grazing on farmlands near a community college. The herders, reportedly armed, opened fire, killing Nwaozuzu and injuring others.
HURIWA warned that unchecked attacks on farming communities could lead to widespread hunger and insecurity in Imo State. It insisted that the state government must implement effective deterrent measures and hold perpetrators accountable to prevent anarchy.
