The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Kebbi State has advised residents of communities along the River Goronyo and River Niger to relocate immediately, following plans to release water from nearby dams.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi, the Assistant Director and Head of Media and Communication, Larai Saminu Nazo, said the controlled release was necessary to safeguard the dams but warned that it would significantly raise river levels, posing serious risks to flood-prone communities.

“The gradual release of water is crucial to ensure the safety of the dams. However, it will inevitably cause a rise in water levels, endangering lives and properties in low-lying areas,” Nazo explained.

The agency said it is collaborating with emergency management bodies and river basin authorities to alert residents and provide assistance. It also urged the public to follow official updates and cooperate with local authorities on evacuation measures.

Nazo appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to take the warning seriously. “Timely action now can avert disaster. We urge everyone in the affected areas to move to safer locations without delay,” she stressed.
