The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has called on women to play a greater role in local governance as the country prepares for the 2026 local government elections.
Speaking at an event themed “Women Championing Democracy, paving the Way to 2026 Local Government Elections” on Wednesday, IEC Deputy Chairperson Janet Love stressed the importance of women’s participation in addressing service delivery challenges faced by many communities.
Love said the shortcomings in governance should not discourage women but instead inspire them to contest leadership roles and bring meaningful change at the municipal level.
“Where governance has failed, women must see the opportunity to step forward, contribute their skills, and strengthen democracy,” she said.
The IEC initiative forms part of broader efforts to increase women’s representation in politics and ensure that gender inclusivity remains a priority in the democratic process.
