Segun Sowunmi, former spokesman to ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has said President Bola Tinubu will face a more formidable challenge in 2027 if former President Goodluck Jonathan decides to contest the presidency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking on Nigeria Info FM 99.3, Sowunmi described Jonathan as a potential “wild card” for the PDP, stressing that the former president would not struggle with legitimacy issues in the South-South, while also commanding considerable support in the North and Middle Belt.

“Jonathan may be our wild-cat; Jonathan is the man. He won’t have legitimacy problems in the South-South, and he’ll have good votes in the North and Middle Belt,” Sowunmi said.

He added that Tinubu would require a stronger strategy than the one he deployed in 2023 to withstand Jonathan, should the former president join the race.

According to him, widespread dissatisfaction in parts of the North with Tinubu’s administration could also tilt the balance if Jonathan emerges as PDP’s candidate.

Although political speculations continue to swirl, Jonathan has yet to declare any intention to contest in 2027.
