After 16 years of legal battles and strained relations, the people of Achara in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State and Ugwueme in Agwu Local Government Area of Enugu State have reached a landmark agreement to settle their long-standing boundary dispute out of court.

The breakthrough was achieved on Friday during the second phase of a peace and reconciliation meeting hosted by the Chairman of Umunneochi LGA, Sunday Afurobi. The session was attended by key stakeholders, including Abia State lawmaker Mathias Nwachi and Enugu State legislator Anthony Okafor.

In a unanimous resolution, both communities agreed to end the protracted litigation and “settle at home.” To formalize this decision, a joint delegation—comprising the two state assembly members, Afurobi, and three representatives from each community—will attend the next court sitting to request the formal withdrawal of the case.

As part of the peace process, both parties were also encouraged to exchange relevant documents before their next meeting. Delegates commended Afurobi’s impartial and skillful mediation, describing it as instrumental in achieving the historic resolution.

The agreement marks a significant step toward restoring harmony and lasting peace between the two neighboring communities.
