The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Saturday expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the local government elections in Rivers State, describing the exercise as a milestone in restoring grassroots governance and unlocking financial autonomy for councils.

Wike, who cast his vote at Polling Unit 007, Ward 9 (Rumuepirikom Kingdom) in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, commended residents for turning out in large numbers, particularly in residential communities.

“I want to thank RSIEC for successfully conducting the elections,” he told journalists after voting. “In commercial areas, turnout is usually low, but in residential communities, the participation here has been very encouraging.”

The minister dismissed doubts about the legality of the polls, stressing that the exercise was in full compliance with constitutional provisions, in line with the Supreme Court ruling that outlawed caretaker committees in local councils.

“There was no valid election before; the Supreme Court said so. But today, a lawful election is being held, which is why people are coming out. If you do something not recognised by law, it will be set aside. This process is clear and credible,” Wike said.

He emphasised that the election was not only about grassroots representation but also about enabling councils to directly access funds from the Federation Account.

“Without democratically elected councils, funds cannot be released. Now, with this election, resources will flow to the grassroots where they truly belong. We must thank Mr President for ensuring this exercise takes place,” he added.

Wike further noted the timing of the election, pointing out that it came ahead of the expected expiration of the emergency rule in Rivers State on September 18.

“I do know that by September 18, the state of emergency will expire, the state assembly will resume, and we will have a government functioning at the grassroots level. With this election, every tier of government will be fully represented, ensuring stability across the state,” he stated.

He also disclosed that reports from rural areas showed strong voter participation.
