Niger: Mob Burns Woman to Death Over Alleged Blasphemy

A woman identified as Amaye has been lynched and set ablaze by a mob in Kasuwan-Garba, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, over alleged blasphemous remarks.

Amaye, a restaurant owner, reportedly made comments considered offensive while interacting with a customer who jokingly proposed marriage to her, citing a religious tradition. Her response was said to have angered community members.

She was initially taken to the palace of the District Head and later handed over to security operatives for investigation. However, the mob overpowered the officers and killed her.

Confirming the incident, Niger State Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said it occurred on August 30, 2025, around 2:00 p.m. He explained that despite efforts to restore calm, the woman was set ablaze before security reinforcements could arrive.

Abiodun condemned the act of jungle justice, stressing that investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute those involved. He urged residents to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies to handle sensitive matters in accordance with the law.

The killing has sparked outrage among residents and human rights advocates, who decried the recurring spate of mob justice in parts of the country and called for stronger measures to prevent future incidents.
